News Update (neh, just kidding)

I've got a new apartment baby, interior colour of red
(Ok - it's actually a room in a house and it's not red but it's still worth singing about anyway).

Lots of new treats for you this week - still enjoying the tracks from local outfit Snowbug as well as (finally) getting my hands on the new(ish) Yo La Tengo album "I'm not afraid of you and I will beat your ass". Huzzah.

There's also the Tenacious D movie ("The Pick of Destiny") soundtrack, new stuff from Jarvis Cocker and particularly exciting is the new Tom Waits 3 disc collection of oddities (does the guy do anything else?) called Orphans - Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards.

Throw in some CW Stoneking, some Ground Components and a rediscovering of a band called the Sea and Cake and I think we have the fixings of a pretty cool show.

(Of course, you could swap over to JJJ if you prefer - or should I say if you are the kind of person who would vote for Dark Side of the Moon as favourite album of all time - or Anthony Callea & Delta Goodrem over the Stones in the top 100. Says it all really)

The future of Rock (RAWWWWK) is in safe hands

I caught Airbourne at the Green Room in Phillip last night - for those who don't know, Airbourne is an AC/DCesque 4 piece from Warrnambool who released an EP in 2004 and were picked up by Capitol records for a 5 album deal in 2005 - and rawwwk they did.

They play simple rock - very loud, driving, sweaty and flailing around in a way that makes Iggy Pop look comatose. I don't think I've ever seen a band work that hard and at the same time they keep an incredibly tight sound. Everyone there absolutely loves being up on stage in a rock band and while they know they are good (in the way that only a bunch of 18-22 guys can) they aren't arrogant about it, they're just having a ball.

I'd say I only heard the singer say half a dozen words (and only between songs) that weren't screeched out in a very rock'n'roll Bon Scott style - even the between song banter was screamed at the crowd (the first time I've ever heard the word Canberra sound rocklike - I loved it) and it was nice to see that they had customised the banter to bring some local relevance.

Even the song intros were classic dumb rock (dumb in the best way, don't get me wrong) - "This one's for all the heartbreakers out there - It's called Heartbreaker" "This one's for the girls in black out there - it's called Girls in black" (and so on)

As the singer walked past me (literally, within a metre or so) in the middle of a song doing a rock thing where he leaves the stage and goes behind the bar to pour himself a beer and brings it back onstage, I remember thinking to myself, this is a special moment. (And yes, I tried to get the cameraphone working but it was too dark)

Great band, great show. Keep an eye on them.

(As for their recorded stuff - have only heard the one track on their myspace page - here and it's well put together, heavily ACDC inspired rock. Nothing mindblowing but fortunately that's where the live shows come in.

Back on track - tunes for today

Got a few new treats for your listening pleasure today (and I would have had some Snowbug but - well, um - lent that cd to a friend - next week for sure. In the interests of disclosure, my new housemate is in the band but what I've heard so far I actually do quite like, which helps).

Anyways, we have some delta blues style offerings from CW Stoneking, Ground Components, Love outside Andromeda and a tune from the new album from those sadly underrated workhorses The Fauves.

As ever, if you liked something or didn't like something or have a request (that's anatomically possible), leave us a comment.

cheers - oh, by the way, the Movember thing is still in full swing, check out the full story (with day by day progress pictures - here)

Mo-nday Sunset

Sorry - just trying to maintain the string of Mo based puns I've committed to for Movember. (Pun or wordplay?)

Anyways, as I mentioned before, couple of tracks from the new Ground Components cd for your listening pleasure and the usual grab bag of odds and ends that hopefully you haven't heard too much of. (I'm a big fan of the kind of radio that makes you go - cool, what was that song?)

There's also a small tribute to a man some have dubbed the cross between Iggy Pop and Dorian Gray of Australian Rock, Ian Rilen. Ian Rilen died last week of bladder cancer after having been diagnosed earlier in the year. He played bass in Rose Tattoo (and co-wrote their biggest hit Bad Boy for Love) and went on to play in seminal outfit X as well as Sardine v and a bunch of others. Rest in peace.

Late Breaking News: I'm growing a Mo

I'm going to paste this blurb in directly from the Movember people because they explain it better than me, but essentially, I'm going to grow a Mo during November to raise money for Men's health. (The health, not the magazine)

Hi all,

During Movember (the month formerly known as November) I’ll be growin a moustache. That’s right I’m bringing the Mo back because I’m passionate about changing the state of men’s health.

Male health is a major issue, did you know:

Men are far less healthy than women. The average life expectancy of males is 6 years less than females.
Every year in Australia 2,700 men die of prostate cancer – more than the number of women who die from breast cancer.
Depression affects 1 in 6 men…Most don’t seek help. Untreated depression is a leading risk factor for suicide. Rates of suicide are more than double the national road toll.
Help me change the face of men’s health by sponsoring my mo.

Please go to http://www.movember.com.au/au/sponsor, enter my Rego number which is 25953 and your credit card details. All donations of $2 and over are tax deductible.

The money raised by Movember will be used to change the face of men's health by creating awareness and funding research into prostate cancer and male depression.

Movember culminates at the end of the month at the Gala Partè where I’ll be parading my Mo on the cat walk for a chance to be crowned the Man of Movember. If you want to be part of this great night you’ll have to purchase a Gala Parte ticket for $33.00 (inc GST).

Cheers

Colin

More info is available at www.movember.com.au

I'm also running (yet another) blog, this one focussing on my mo progress which you can check out here

Expect regular postings (better than here, hey) and pics and at least one bad mo pun each day.

In unrelated news, just picked up the new Ground Components (Melb) album and it's a cracker - lots of rock weirdness and a ripper cover of the Paul Kelly song Our Sunshine (about Ned Kelly). Tune in on Monday to hear a little.

Took a week at the coast last week - many thanks to the incomparable Sylvie for filling in for me - but back now and with a swag of musical goodies for your aural pleasuring.

(And I turned 35 yesterday - yikes - but fear not, no sign of growing up just yet - no wife, no kids and no mortgage on no house in the burbs - (after all, what else defines being a grown up?)

Tunes just for you - enjoy

Bits and pieces from all over the shop - including new stuff from Jet (sadly pretty well the only half decent track on the album), Beck (pretty well back in form), Boytown (yeah, it's probably all over commercial radio but, well, I like Mick Molloy), The Lemonheads (same as their old stuff but still good) and Dallas Crane (good rockin'). You say party! We say die! are still kicking goals as well.

Hits and memories

Hmm, been living the good life down in Melbourne town for the last week so today's show is going to be a little bit of a trip down memory lane - still, it's all good stuff so I hope you enjoy.

(And in brief - more to come later I hope - definitely check out Macbeth and Wind that shakes the barley is worthy but kind of plain)

Back in the olllllllden days...

A group of friends and I worked on a show for Channel 31 in Melbourne called Brown Couch - I've started digitising the old VHS and SVHS tapes before they crumble to dust and this is one of my favourite bits so far.

New tunes (and old)

I thought I'd keep working through the Radiodread album a little this week as I'm still listening to it and loving it. Aside from that, possibly taking a little bit of a nostalgia trip but hopefully there's some stuff in here that'll make you think - cool, I'd forgotten about that one.

hope you like em

Murdoch is a moron "says" Andrew Bolt

Every other person I've spoken to in the last day or so keeps asking me if I caught Al Gore's interview on Denton on Monday night. Umm, no. Oops. By all accounts it was fantastic - while the transcript is good, (here), I'm sure it doesn't quite do it justice.

Anyways, I was lucky enough to see the movie - An Inconvenient Truth - and would urge everyone to check it out. Fortunately the murky pool of in-denial corporate hold-outs is getting smaller by the day - even Rupert Murdoch jumped on the bandwagon and his papers are even starting to fall into line. Well, except for the Australian ones anyways.

I mean, seriously, what is it going to take for the Australian and it's stablemates to pull their heads out of the collective arses of John Howard, Ian Campbell (Minister for the Environment and Heritage) and the Coal and Oil industries?

Even massive corporations like BP, Origin Energy, Visy and Westpac Bank agree that we need radical change to save the planet. (Of course, on the other side is the somewhat more sinister Australian Industry Greenhouse Network - coal producers and big industry - who pull the Government's strings)

Andrew Bolt has reserved his own special place deep inside Howard's colon with this rant today - I just hope someone sends it off to Rupert. Actually, what's his email address?

I'd like to take the time to go through and dissect his lunatic (but no doubt well financed) ravings piece by piece, but fortunately I know that the good folks at Boltwatch are already on the case. It's not up yet, but check back soon, I'm sure it'll be well worth the price of admission.

What I don't get is that anyone claims that any of this stuff is actually seriously contentious - after all, is it a debate when 9999 out of 10000 people in a room think the same thing? Yet because the media like nothing better than conflict, the views of the 1 in 10000 are reported as the other, equal, side of the debate.

gaaaaaahhhhh.

In PR circles, it's known as FUD - fear, uncertainty and doubt. It doesn't matter how accurate your claims are, all you need to do is claim to be able to poke holes in an argument and a lot of people turn away, thinking "well, if they aren't even sure, what hope do I have".

Boytown

This is the cover of the first single from Mick Molloy's Boytown movie - the story of a boy band come back. Can't wait to see it. (Mick is the guy in shades).

The song itself is more ballad than anything - it has the overproduced boyband sound but I was hoping for the bodgy dance sound more. Maybe next time.

My songs

Bit of an eclectic mix today for you - sprinkled with the covers that I seem to love so much.
A couple from the previously mentioned Radiodread album as well as a mashup of the Ghostbusters theme with Nine Inch Nails "The Hand that feeds" and Placebo's cover of the Serge Gainsbourg song The Ballad of Melody Nelson (taken from the otherwise Very disappointing Monsieur Gainsbourg Revisited album that I actually shelled money out for recently).

If you want to hear some good English language versions of Serge Gainsbourg songs (which are crackers in their own right), better off chasing up the two albums that Bad Seed Mick Harvey has released - Pink Elephants and Intoxicated Man. He at least has the decency to keep them kind of sleazy cool. (I'm looking at you Cat Power, you sellout - Greatest my arse.)

By means of explanation - one of Gainsbourg's most well known songs - "I love you...nor do I" - has a chorus which (basically) goes - I go, I go and I come, between your kidneys (literal translation - rhymes in French at least) - Mick Harvey tweaked it to I go, I go and I come, inside you my love - which keeps the rhythm but Cat Power wusses out with I go, I go and I come, between you - which doesn't even maintain the tune, let alone suggest anything. Maybe there's a reason or a really crap translator involved but I kind of doubt it

OK Computer - Reggae style

I've just been listening to some tracks by the Easy Star All Stars - a reggae outfit who are release a reggae version of the classic Radiohead album OK Computer.

These are the same guys who put out Dub Side of the Moon a few years ago - rasta'ing up Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon.

From what I've heard so far, this actually kind of works.

check it out here http://www.hyfntrak.com/radiodread/fromafriend/

I just read that Thom Yorke praised the album onstage at a gig as well - so it's kosher - uhh so to speak :)

zenburger | where nothing adds up » Blog Archive » top 5 things that amount to nothing

This post tickles me particularly because it drops a beautifully well deserved dump on one of my least favourite bands of all time - U2. (There are a few other overrated artists sledged - Tarantino perhaps a little harshly - but U2 I reserve a special place in the bottom level of hell for)

2. Most overrated rock band: U2. U2 are like INXS with religion. The shallow masquerading as the deep. You can’t even say they’re style without substance. There’s neither style nor substance, just empty bombast. Make that bombs. They’re like the musical equivalent of a Gulf War campaign. Shock and Awe. Their well-oiled war machine rolls into town and wins hearts and minds but takes no prisoners. On stage, they look like company directors who were asked to be good sports and dress up as rock stars for the school play. Bono – chairman of the board – prowls around wailing about peace, love and freedom, but his body language says ‘control’. All their (interchangeable) songs tell us U2 are our spiritual teachers. They know something and they’re going to keep singing it, to a relentless 4/4 beat, until we finally get it.

The things people say.

http://www.overheardinnewyork.com

Came across this site the other day - pages and pages of funny and weird things overheard in New York. Very easy to waste hours here but very entertaining.

Personal highlight -

Mom: ...and you have to hold my hand before we go out into the street.
Little girl: Best fucking advice ever.

And the beg-athon continues

Last day of Radiothon (thank God) - while it's nice to have something to break up the routine, it kind of gets a little painful when you pitch pitch pitch for people to support the station and consistently get very little. (Big thanks to the people who did subscribe during Monday and Tuesday Sunsets last week, by the way)

Nifty Flash animation

If you have ever used Flash (or even a computer I guess), you should find this Flash centred cartoon pretty funny. It is all about the battle between a Flash animator and his creation. Kudos to Alan Becker for this one.

Songs of joy

Ok, so maybe this whole exercise is on the futile side, what with the lack of comments/feedback/reasons-to-live but what the hey, I might as well add my bunch of 1s and 0s to this great big blogosphere thing, right?

Anyways, it would be nice to know someone is out there paying attention - maybe I'm optimistic to think that people are listening to their radios at the same time that they are online, in fairness, can't say I ever do but it would be nice to think someone was prepared to stop by and say hi once in a while anyways.

So please, if you're here, would it kill you to leave a comment. See the bit at the bottom of the post where it says 0 comments? Just click on that and say something. I'd do it for your blog (if I knew about it) - honest

Anyways, this is what I played yesterday. (Actually, that's not entirely true, I think I got up to Your Missing - Cowboy Junkies on the soft cd and Chase the Dragon - Beasts of Bourbon on the loud one.

Oh Lordi - Eurovision goes Metal

Well, far be it from me to blow my own horn (though like all guys, you know I would if I could :) but take a look back through the archives of this blog to the entry from the 27th of March where you'll notice I got perhaps a little excited about the Finnish entry in Eurovision this year.

That's right, it was Lordi, the monster themed metal band who last night took out Finland's first ever Eurovision victory and also did a great interview in their press conference afterwards

"“Think about it, a rock band just won a pop song contest. This is weird, strange, interesting. This is for all rock fans, hard rock fans, metal fans and Kiss fans. And we didn’t just win – we won it for Finland.”

He then sang the chorus of Lithuania entry, ‘We Are The Winners’." And that Lithuanian entry is a whole other thing again

Evidently the band has been embroiled in a little controversy at home, with the Finnish leader expressing concern that they might give Finland a bad name overseas (be interesting to see the backpedal now) and claims elsewhere that the band are satanic. Lordi addressed this pretty well in his press conference as well though

“For the millionth time, we’re not Satanists or devil worshippers,” he said. “This is entertainment. The masks are like our calling card and we’ll never perform without them. It would be like Santa Claus handing a child his gifts and Christmas time and then pulling off his beard and saying, ‘By the way, I’m your father…’”

Read all about it on the Eurovision website - http://www.eurovision.tv/english/index.htm

Last weeks tracks

Yeah, umm, kind of forgot to do that one I know - sorry if you were wondering - got a bunch of new music this week though and will also highlight a bit of Lordi, so I hope you enjoy

Bush cops a comedy beating at major dinner

Democracy Now! | Stephen Colbert's Blistering Performance Mocking Bush and the Press Goes Ignored by the Media

Maybe you're already across this, but if you aren't, Daily Show performer Stephen Colbert was guest speaker at the annual White House Press Corp dinner the other week. Standing about 5 feet about from George W and in full character doing his conservative commentator bit, he proceeded to sledge Bush for the better part of 20 minutes, while the President just looked more and more annoyed.

He also had a thing or two to say to the assembled journalists in the room about how slack they'd been in keeping the government accountable, which is probably why his speech got almost no coverage in the mainstream media in the US until it had swept the web, getting more than 500,000 viewings on YouTube (a popular web video site).

It's largely been removed from the web by now (apparently due to Copyright issues) but can still be found here and there - here for now ( http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=06/05/03/145234 )

Here are a couple of excerpts to give you some idea.

Mark Smith, ladies and gentlemen of the press corps, Madame First Lady, Mr. President, my name is Stephen Colbert, and tonight it is my privilege to celebrate this president, ‘cause we're not so different, he and I. We both get it. Guys like us, we're not some brainiacs on the nerd patrol. We're not members of the factinista. We go straight from the gut. Right, sir?

That's where the truth lies, right down here in the gut. Do you know you have more nerve endings in your gut than you have in your head? You can look it up. Now, I know some of you are going to say, "I did look it up, and that's not true." That's 'cause you looked it up in a book. Next time, look it up in your gut. I did. My gut tells me that's how our nervous system works.

And as excited as I am to be here with the President, I am appalled to be surrounded by the liberal media that is destroying America, with the exception of FOX News. FOX News gives you both sides of every story: the President's side, and the Vice President's side.

But the rest of you, what are you thinking? Reporting on NSA wiretapping or secret prisons in Eastern Europe? Those things are secret for a very important reason: they're super-depressing. And if that's your goal, well, misery accomplished.

This years Finnish entry in Eurovision

A Finnish friend of mine put me on to these guys - a very cheesy and entirely entertaining metal outfit called Lordi.

Lordi will be the official Finnish act in the Eurovision song contest this year and have a very 80's metal / cockrock kind of sound, with lyrics all in English. There's a kind of The Darkness feel about them but heavier and without the o.t.t falsetto.

According to their bio

Lordi is a self-taught professional FX-make-up artist. Each costume and make-up has been designed, sculpted and detail painted by himself. It takes up to five hours to get the whole band applied in make-up and dressed in the multi-part rubber suits.

The stage set, which contains two stone towers with gargoyles on top, a wide stone logo and a whole lot of horrific props, were also done by the band from the scratch.

Lordi also drew a 12-page Lordi comic book, which was given to consumers as a bonus gift when they purchased the first single "Would You Love A Monsterman?". The single went gold and reached #1 in the Finnish single charts.

Lordi entered the studio to record their debut album "Get Heavy" with producer T.T. Oksala in early 2002.

Musically Lordi is strongly inspired by 80's heavy metal melodies, with a twist of modern day programming. Simple, striking, ass-kicking heavy rock!

The album was finally mixed in London at SARM STUDIOS by Kevin Shirley, who?s previous work includes names like IRON MAIDEN, AEROSMITH and THE BLACK CROWES among others.

Being a strongly visual band, Lordi shot their first video, "Would You Love A Monsterman?", in a staged horror forest. It was designed by the professionals that were behind OZZY OSBOURNE's image.

The video was also co-scripted by Lordi, who drew the storyboards. The "Would You Love A Monsterman?" video gives a glimpse of what to expect from the up-coming Lordi stage shows: pyros, special effects and monsters.

Lots more information to be found on their official website - http://www.lordi.org
